Why H.E.R.E?

When we encounter someone who needs help, the first question after asking ourselves “What can I do?” is often “Who do I know who can help?”

H.E.R.E. exists to strengthen that connection. The program brings together students and community members to build an ever-growing network that connects people who know

what people need with the resources that exist to help them.

Participants become community liaisons who learn how to navigate real resources within real communities. Through these relationships, they develop the ability to respond to community needs by knowing where to turn and who to connect with in real time.

Many students preparing for helping professions learn about community systems in the classroom, but have limited opportunities to connect directly with the organizations serving their communities.

H.E.R.E. was created to help students build those connections early while developing leadership, advocacy, and community engagement skills.

What happens H.E.R.E?

H.E.R.E. participants meet twice each week throughout the 12-week cohort.

One meeting focuses on learning and professional development, while the other focuses on direct

community engagement.

Learning & Development Sessions
During these meetings, students participate in panels, trainings, and workshops led by professionals and community leaders. These sessions help students build leadership, advocacy, and community navigation skills while learning how local systems and organizations support community needs.

Community Action Sessions
Students spend time in the community connecting with local organizations and resources. Depending on the organization, students may volunteer, participate in site visits, or learn directly from staff about the work they do and the needs they see in the community.

Community Partner Projects
Each student team collaborates with a community partner to create a practical resource that will continue to benefit the organization after the cohort ends. Projects are designed to be realistic within the 12-week timeline and may include items such as volunteer welcome materials, resource guides, or other tools that support the partner’s work.

Leadership Opportunities
At the end of each cohort, two students may be invited to return as peer leaders to help support the next group of participants.

All cohort members are encouraged to remain connected with community partners and the H.E.R.E. network so they can continue sharing resources and strengthening community connections.
